This camp is for students who will be going into 7th-12th grade the 2016/17 school year
Learn from the best professionals in the industry at HAPCO’s Summer Jazz Camp! Improve your performance skills in full ensemble rehearsals, sectionals, master classes, combo workshops, as well as theory, jazz history and improvisation training. The camp is designed to accommodate musicians ranging from the less experienced to the most talented, with a minimum of one year of training on your chosen instrument.
Leading classes will be Wycliffe Gordon, one of today’s top trombonists, who has exceptional technique and produces a signature sound. Scott Wilson, director of jazz studies at University of Florida; Bernie Hendricks, director of bands for Ocoee High School; and Lenard Rutledge, Miami jazz vocalist, will join Wycliffe in instruction, including curriculum from the Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Band Camps in New Orleans. Ocoee High School Alumni Andrew Kennedy of The Next Gen Jazztet will be youth advisor.
Dr. Otto Gomez will present a special session on The Business of Music. He will present the typical flow of activities from “idea” to “product” to “consumer.” He will discuss management, promotion, distribution and the roles of artists, producers, arrangers and engineers.
Other instructors include university professors, middle and high school teachers, master, elective and lesson teachers, administrators, and undergraduate and graduate students. Together, their knowledge and experience support an extraordinary educational opportunity where campers build confidence and develop good habits and attitudes that shape their future. Assembled for their talent, teaching ability, dedication and enthusiasm for music, the camp professionals ensure the young musicians learn in a positive and energetic environment.
Overnight campers will enjoy group outings to area theme parks Walt Disney World® Resort and Universal.
At a special movie night, all campers will enjoy the insightful and moving documentary feature film Point and Drive. Producer and director Brandi Mitchell explores the remarkable story behind the most famous and imitated marching band of all time, the Florida A&M University Marching 100 band. The documentary presents the passion, talents, history, struggles and triumphs of the band, told from the voices of successful alumni spanning over four decades. It shows the beauty and anatomy of the Historically Black College and University [HBCU] halftime show, which the Marching 100’s founder, Dr. William P. Foster innovated. The documentary also chronicles the band’s influence on young adults from all societal backgrounds, forever changing their lives, culture and traditions.
Parents, families and friends are invited to attend this premier showing on Monday, July 18, 2016 at 7pm at the Ocoee High School auditorium. Information on tickets coming soon.
While at camp, students will be supervised by our staff of Resident Camp Counselors. Meals are also taken care of (lunch for day campers and breakfast, lunch and dinner for overnight campers).
At the end of the camp, students will perform in a concert at Disney Springs.
